Nominations are open for East Riding young people who want to stand for elections to a body to represent the area nationally.
Young people aged between 11 and 18 who live, work, study or volunteer in the East Riding can stand as a candidate for elections to Youth Parliament set for January.
East Riding Council Children, Families and Education Portfolio Holder Cllr Victoria Aitken said she encouraged young people to use their energy and passion and get involved.
Detty Tyler, of the Community VISION voluntary services group, said it was a fantastic opportunity to make their voices heard.
Elections to Youth Parliament take place every two years.
They will come as the two East Riding members for Youth Parliament Aonpreeya Petchatchua and Freya Edwards step down when their terms of office end.
Nominations are open to young peope in mainstream or specialist education, doing post-16 learning as well as those who are home educated.
Nominees are required to write their own manifestos outlining what they would like to change if elected and they will be able to campaign ahead of the elections.
The closing date for nominations is on Wednesday, December 6, with young people set to go to the polls in the week from Monday, January 29.
A declaration event is set to be held at Beverley on Thursday, March 7.
The winning candidates of the upcoming elections will get to sit in the Houses of Parliament and vote on issues important to young people.
Cllr Aitken said it will help introduce young people to the democratic process.
The portfolio holder said:
“It is a great opportunity for a young person from the East Riding to represent us on a national level.
“Anyone in the East Riding aged between 11 and 18 can nominate themselves.
“I would encourage everyone to think about how they can use their energy and passion to bring about change and consider putting themselves forward as a candidate.”
Community VISION’s Mr Tyler said candidates would be supported throughout the process.
She said:
“Youth Parliament is a fantastic opportunity for young people in East Riding to have their voices heard at a national level and to really make a difference for all young people in East Riding.”
