Raincliffe Wood Community Event Returns

Scarborough-based organisation Raincliffe Wood Community Enterprise are holding a Secret Wood event on Saturday.

The event is a celebration of Raincliffe Woods and the Forge Valley Nature Reserve and takes place on Saturday 20th August, from 11am to 5pm.

There will be a range of family friendly activities, from traditional coppice crafts to have a go archery, guided walks to storytelling. It is also an opportunity to learn more about the history of the woodland, its management and the plants and animals that call it home. As well as this, there will also be live music and performances throughout the day.

This event is part of the Scarborough’s Wonderful Woodlands project, which has been funded by the National Lottery Community Fund to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

Gillian Astbury, Events and Outreach Officer at Raincliffe Wood Community Enterprise, said:

“This is an exciting event to really showcase Raincliffe Woods and its importance to the local community. We want to encourage local people to explore the woods, learn more about its history and become invested in its future. Most importantly, we want people to enjoy being outside in this amazing place.

As well as this year being the Platinum Jubilee, it also marks the 70th Anniversary of the first National Nature Reserve. We are very proud of the fact that the Forge Valley is a National Nature Reserve due to its incredible biodiversity, and as such are delighted that this event is part of Natural England’s Festival of National Nature Reserves.

I would like to say a massive thank you to all our partner groups, the local businesses and organisations that are helping to support this event, and to National Lottery players who have made it all possible.”

The event is free of charge, with no need to book. The site is accessible from all carparks, and there will be disabled parking available. Refreshments and toilet facilities are available, but as the event is taking place in the woodland, please remember to bring cash.

Raincliffe Wood Community Enterprise is one of 91 organisations across the country to be awarded funding from the Platinum Jubilee Fund, which has been launched by The National Lottery Community Fund to celebrate 70 years of Her Majesty The Queen’s reign, by providing impactful grants to projects across the UK that are helping to bring communities together.

The community woodland will use its grant to deliver an exciting programme of celebratory events that bring all parts of the community together and inspire them to care for and take action for this valuable ancient woodland.  Events will include guided walks, star gazing, heritage craft workshops, mapping sessions, bushcraft events and food festivals.  Working with local schools and youth groups the project will also upskill and empower a group of young ambassadors to help protect and enhance the community woodland, and create digital resources to take the woodland out to those with accessibility needs.

The ’Scarborough’s Wonderful Woodlands’ project launched with a mass participation walk ‘The Big Raincliffe Ramble’ over the Jubilee Weekend.

Blondel Cluff CBE, Chair of The National Lottery Community Fund, said:

“This Platinum Jubilee year is a special moment for the nation and, thanks to National Lottery players, many more people will have the opportunity to come together and celebrate. Charities and good causes we support will help capture community spirit and pride during this historic, celebratory year, enabling people to prosper and thrive in 2022 and beyond.”
