Protection Zone Put In Place after Bird Flu Case Near Bridlington

A case of highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 has been confirmed in commercial poultry near Bridlington.

The Highly pathogenic avian influenza was first suspected in commercial poultry on 27 August at a premises near Bridlington. Following official testing, H5N1 was confirmed on 28 August 2022.

A Temporary Control Zone that had been put in place has now been revoked and replaced by a 3km Protection Zone and 10km Surveillance Zone.

DEFRA say that all poultry on the affected premises will be humanely culled.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has said that avian influenza is primarily a disease of birds and the risk to the general public’s health is very low.

The Food Standards Agency has said that on the basis of the current scientific evidence, avian influenza poses a very low food safety risk for UK consumers. Properly cooked poultry and poultry products, including eggs, are safe to eat.

Currently the government has confirmed 115 cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 in England. When avian influenza is confirmed or suspected in poultry or other captive birds, disease control zones are put in place around the infected premises to prevent the spread of the disease. Within these zones a range of restrictions on the movement of poultry and material associated with their keeping can apply.

A protection zone that had been in place across Great Britain since last November was lifted earlier in the month.

The new Protection Zone comprises an area of radius 3 kilometres, centred on grid reference TA1681071587. The zone is the area within the smaller blue circle on the map below. The Surveillance Zone is a 10km zone shown by the black circle on the map.

Within the protection zone anyone who keeps poultry or captive birds must now keep records of any visitors to their premises and details of any poultry or eggs leaving the premises. They must also introduce biosecurity measures to reduce the risk of the spread of the disease.

In the surveillance zone similar restrictions are also now in place.
