Police in Scarborough have warned about a spate of bike thefts.
North Yorkshire Police say:
We are working hard to investigate and catch those responsible. Officers from the Neighbourhood Policing Team successfully investigated and recovered a bike yesterday, after it was stolen in the early hours (between 2 a.m. – 3 a.m.). The bike was stolen from the rear garden of an address on Barrowcliff.
One male has been arrested on suspicion of theft, and the stolen bike will be returned to its owner.
They have the following advice to help avoid having a bike stolen:
Keep your bike inside, out of sight.
Keep windows and doors locked.
Consider security lights and CCTV.
If outside, keep it covered and double lock it. Thieves are less likely to carry multiple tools, use two different types of lock if possible. Smaller chains can be cut quickly and silently by bolt-cutters. A stronger lock such as a D-lock cannot be cut so easily and would typically require the use of a power tool e.g., a battery powered angle grinder, which are noisy.
Restrict access and padlock gates. Thieves can reach over and slide gate bolts.
Note your bikes frame number and register it on a national database such as www.bikeregister.com or www.immobilse.com.
Mark your bike, this acts as a deterrent and enables stolen bikes to be traced. This service is offered by www.bikeregister.com.
If your bike has been stolen, please report it to Police straight away. Time is of the essence.
If you notice your bike missing, dial 101. If it has just happened, its in progress or you see anyone acting suspiciously e.g., looking into gardens etc., dial 999.
