A Filey resident has launched a petition to get temporary toilets installed on Coble landing for the summer season.
The toilets on Ravine Road were closed in November, they are going to be demolished and replaced with new facilities, but delays to the planning process mean that wont happen before the summer.
Jonathan Cairns says it's already causing problems for businesses and visitors, he's calling for North Yorkshire Council to put in temporary toilets until the permanent facilities can be replaced.
If the petition gets over 500 signatures then the it would have to be debated by the council's local area committee.
Jonathan Cairns says local traders are really concerned about the effect of the lack of toilets over the coming weeks.
The public toilets at Coble Landing were closed last November, Jonathan says the original plan had been to refurbish or replace them over the winter but that scheme hit problems.
Jonathan has now submitted a petition request to North Yorkshire Council, the petition says:
"We the undersigned petition the County Council to We, the residents, visitors and businesses of Filey Petition North Yorkshire Council to :
1. Provide temporary toilets for Coble Landing, whilst the new toilets are being demolished and replaced.
2. To provide free access at the point of entry to all toilet facilities in Filey, so as to be compatible with the Thirsk and Malton Area, in which Filey is now based.
3. To ensure that all toilet facilities are open all year round ( allowing for reduced hours in winter )
4. To ask the council to reinstate the footbath at the side of Ravine toilets, and to ensure a suitable safety barrier is installed
5. To have flexible opening hours for the Ravine toilets in the month of December to support the Festive event.
On 1st November 2022, Scarborough Borough Council , closed without warning or consultation 4, separate toilet blocks.
The replacement block to serve Ravine road ( aka Coble Landing toilets should have been reopened on 17th March 2023. Filey is a seaside town and depends on tourism. The delay in planning was due to SBC not identifying, that Ravine toilets were in a conservation area.
On 1st April 2023, Filey joined the “ Ryedale Area”. Filey residents are entitled to the same provision of services. The request for free entry is until, the question of fees for the whole district, has been reviewed ,which would be fair. This follows the principles of reasonableness.
Filey traders on Coble Landing are having to deal with public health issues, including urination and excrement in public areas.
The provision of Public toilets is a matter of good health and well being, particularly for elderly people, who may otherwise not venture out. See the points raised in “ The Provision of Public Toilets 12th report session 2007-08."
Jonathan says if the petition gets enough support then it would be debated by councillors.
As well as seeking temporary toilets for Coble Landing, Jonathan says the petition is also asking for longer term equality with other parts of teh Thirsk, Malton and Filey constituency large parts of which have free year round public toilets.
The petition can be found online at https://edemocracy.northyorks.gov.uk/mgEPetitionDisplay.aspx?id=4
Planning permission for the demolition of the existing coble Landing toilet block has been approved, but the planning committee couldn't commit to deploying temporary toilets for the summer season.
Councillor Caroline Goodrick is the planning committee chair.
Speaking at a meeting of Filey town Council last month the Mayor -Councillor Jacqui Houlden-Banks - said the town would not cope this summer if there weren't any public toilets at Coble Landing. The Mayor said that it was "imperative" that toilets are available at Coble Landing for the summer season.
