From washing machines to pigeons, there's a wide range of artworks in the next exhibition at Woodend Gallery, Scarborough.
An installation inspired by previous Scarborough resident, Edith Sitwell, with a hint of Roxy Music; intricate ink drawings alongside a washing machine drum bookshelf; and a film of a man dressed as a pigeon, will all feature.
‘A Sense of Place’ will form the final celebration for the Northern Expressions project – an artist development programme to develop northern talent for those without formal arts education, living in Yorkshire and Humber region.
From traditional to contemporary, the new works from local artists Donna Mindart, David Kenney, Alice Kin, Miriam Hemingway, Estar May, Mouse, Jenny Sutton, and Graham Williamson, explore ideas of connection and home.
Coordinated by Scarborough Museums and Crescent Arts, the Northern Expressions programme was created to bring together emerging artists to support them in their practice through research visits, one-to-one supported sessions, studio space to create work, financial aid, and workshops.
The programme is part of a wider project, Connecting Coastal Cultures (CCC), an Arts Council England funded project delivered by Scarborough Museums and Galleries in partnership with Crescent Arts to raise the profile of art in the north of England, and provide opportunities for artists from the area to exhibit in regional venues.
Sara Nowell, CCC Project Manager says:
“The Northern Expressions artist programme and exhibition is a celebration of each artist and northern talent. It is about them, their journey, and their artwork. I’ve had the pleasure of supporting them individually and as a group. If you’re a fan of sculpture, sound, textiles, local artists and pigeons – this exhibition is for you.”
Vickie Bissett, Crescent Arts Director says:
"At Crescent Arts, we’re committed to building a thriving arts ecology. Northern Expressions and the partnership with Scarborough Museums has enriched the cultural fabric of the regional arts sector, and created opportunities for artists and visitors alike to the Woodend Gallery.”
‘A Sense of Place’ opens on Saturday 18 January 2025 at Woodend Gallery, The Crescent, Scarborough. The launch event will take place on Friday 17 January 2025 from 5.30 - 7.30pm.
