North Yorkshire Wildfire Warning

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service is warning about the dangers of wildfires after the recent dry weather.

Concern about wildfires in the North York Moors National Park has been growing for a number of weeks as a period of dry weather continues across the UK.

The low levels of recent rainfall, coupled with very dry ground vegetation such as heather and bracken, forced the National Park Authority to officially announce a fire alert earlier this month and warning signs are being erected across the North York Moors, advising people of the danger and how they can help reduce the risk.

On Wednesday crew from Scarborough Fire station attended a small campfire in the woods near Silpho. The crews extinguished the fire due to the dry conditions. Fire officers are warning the public about he dangers of fire's spreading in teh current dry conditions saying :

"Don’t underestimate the speed of a wildfire. Wildfires can be incredibly dangerous, and one of the scariest things about them is how quickly they can spread.

In just a matter of minutes, a small fire can turn into a raging inferno.

This puts people, property, livelihoods and our beautiful countryside at risk."

The fire service say :

  • Wildfires can move at speeds of up to 14 miles per hour, which is faster than most people can run.
  • The heat from a wildfire can create its own wind, which can cause the fire to spread even faster.
  • In some cases, wildfires can even continue when there is a river or road splitting two areas of land – this makes them incredibly difficult to contain.

This is why it’s so important to take wildfire prevention so seriously, especially when the weather is hot.

By taking measures such as properly disposing of cigarettes and campfire ashes, being careful when using any electrical equipment which could create a spark and not using BBQs in area where they are forbidden we can all help prevent wildfires from starting in the first place.

Remember, when it comes to wildfires, every second counts – call 999 and ask for the Fire Service"

North Yorkshire's Fire and Rescue Service say that many wildfires are preventable and add there there are steps that we can all take to reduce the risk of wildfires :

  1. Be careful with fire: Whether you're camping, cooking outdoors, or lighting a fire in your backyard, it's important to never leave a fire unattended and pay attention to regulations.
  2. Dispose of cigarettes properly: Cigarettes are a common cause of wildfires. If you smoke, make sure to dispose of your cigarettes correctly.
  3. Be aware of weather conditions: Dry and windy conditions can increase the risk of wildfires. Be aware of weather conditions in your area and avoid outdoor activities that could start a fire during these conditions.
  4. Report any signs of fire: If you see smoke or flames, report it immediately to the fire service. Early detection can help prevent a small fire from turning into a large wildfire.

By following these tips, we can all do our part to prevent wildfires and protect our homes, wildlife, and environment. Remember, preventing wildfires is everyone's responsibility."
