North Yorkshire Mayoral Candidates Discuss Fire Service

North Yorkshire's first ever elected Mayor will have responsibility for the Fire and Rescue service, so what do the candidates think needs to change?

North Yorkshire's Fire and Rescue service needs an urgent review.

That's the view of one of the candidates standing in the election to become the county's first elected Mayor.

Paul Haslam is standing as an independent candidate in next week's election.

He says funding for the fire service is a problem.

Elections take place next week to select a mayor who will, amongst other duties, take on responsibility for overseeing the police and fire services.

The Lib Dem candidate standing for the role thinks that North Yorkshire's first elected Mayor will need be a "critical friend" to the counties fire service.

Felicity Cunliffe-Lister says recent changes to the structure of the fire service have raised some concerns.

Green Party candidate, Kevin Foster, says more government help is needed to support North Yorkshire's Fire and Rescue service.

He says he was shocked when he found out how much money the service has borrowed to fund the purchase of essential kit.

Independent candidate, Keith Tordoff, says North Yorkshire's Fire and Rescue service is a "shambles", he wants to make changes.

There are six candidates standing for election on Thursday May 2nd they are:

  • Felicity Cunliffe-Lister for the Liberal Democrats
  • Keane Duncan for the Conservatives
  • Kevin Foster for the Green Party
  • Paul Haslam as an Independent
  • David Skaith for the Labour Party
  • Keith Tordoff as an Independent.

The audio in this report came from the Whitby hustings which were organised by Whitby Community Network. All six candidates had been invited to take part bur two of the candidates were unable to take part. We have since offered both those candidates the opportunity to record interviews on the topics covered at the Whitby hustings event but neither have responded to our approaches.
