Hospital rates in North Yorkshire are not rising as quickly as in previous Covid-19 waves, according to one county health chief, but demand for PCR tests are increasing leading to changes for the Yorkshire Coast's testing centres.
Amanda Bloor, accountable officer for the North Yorkshire Clinical Commissioning Group said that the number of patients in the county’s hospitals was not mirroring the spike in infection rates.
She told a meeting of the North Yorkshire Local Resilience Forum that 22 patients with Covid-19 were in hospital currently, compared to 23 last week.
The number includes two patients in Harrogate Hospital and six in York.
The infection rate in North Yorkshire, meanwhile, continues to rise, with almost 900 cases recorded in the last week. The rate per 100,000 people now stands at 144, up from 45 two weeks ago.
Amanda Bloor told the briefing that at this time the cases do not appear to be leading to more hospitalisations.
COVID testing centres across North Yorkshire are being switched back to offering PCR tests on a full time basis. The centres had been spending part of the day delivering PCR tests and part of the day acting as a drop off and pick up centre for lateral flow tests, but Public Health Consultant Dr Victoria Turner says there has been an increase in the demand for the more accurate PCR test over the last few days.
