North Yorkshire Council Could Be Set For Footway Lights Saving

Monday, 25 September 2023 06:00

By Charlie Hopper with additional reporting from Stuart Minting

North Yorkshire Council is set to spend two point five million pounds replacing thousands of footway lights.

A report has stated that much of the existing footway lighting will be beyond repair within the next five years due to changes in EU legislation that made numerous lamp types obsolete.

It is estimated that around 5,000 of the former district and borough councils footway and amenity lights used an obsolete light source such as high-pressure mercury and low-pressure sodium.

Councillor Keane Duncan is North Yorkshire's executive member for Transport.

Switching footway lighting off between midnight and 5am will further reduce energy consumption and contribute towards the council's carbon reduction targets.

The move to switch off the lights in the early hours is in line with the council's existing roadway lighting.

The new lighting columns could be used to support attachments such as sensors, CCTV camera, ANPR cameras, flower baskets, Christmas displays and next generation BT mobile phone transmitters.

North Yorkshire Councillor-Greg White- explains the benefits of making this change.
