Newby and Scalby Library and Information Centre’s volunteers have been praised in the House of Commons for their “enormous work” in promoting children's literacy.
Scarborough and Whitby MP Alison Hume highlighted the group's recent King’s Award for Voluntary service in the house of commons this week, comparing it to an MBE.
The library, located on Scalby Road in Scarborough, is run by 7 trustees and approximately 60 volunteers. Hume drew attention to the innovative services provided by the volunteers, including:
- A summer reading challenge for children.
- An IT buddy service.
- A garden growing produce.
Responding to the MP, the Secretary of State thanked her for highlighting the work libraries do to improve children's literacy.
The King's Award for Voluntary Service is the highest award a local voluntary group can receive in the UK. It was created in 2002 to celebrate the late Queen's Golden Jubilee and has been continued by King Charles.
Newby and Scalby Library is one of 281 organisations to receive the award in 2024.
Representatives from the library will receive a crystal award and certificate from the Lord-Lieutenant of North Yorkshire. Two volunteers will also attend a garden party at Buckingham Palace in the summer of 2025.
