Nearly 1000 People Back Bus Seatbelt Petition After Hornsea School Bus Collision

Following a collision earlier in the month involving a school bus carrying pupils home from Hornsea School, a petition calling for mandatory seatbelts on all school buses has gained significant traction.

The petition, started by Kelly Jones, has reached 994 signatures on Change.org.

The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, January 22nd, involved a double-decker bus and a tractor on Leas Lane near Seaton. Twenty-nine pupils between the ages of 11 and 16 suffered minor injuries, and two 15-year-olds, a boy and a girl, were hospitalized with serious injuries. The collision prompted investigations by Humberside Police.

The petition argues that seatbelts on school buses are a necessary safety measure. The petition states,

"The distressing fact is that our children would not have had to bear such anguish, had they been wearing seat belts. It's deeply unsettling that a solution as simple as implementing seat belts on school buses could have averted this tragedy."

The petition also points out that while seatbelts are mandatory in many other forms of transport, school buses are an exception.

The petition emphasises that "studies have consistently shown that seatbelts significantly reduce the risk of injury in road accidents". The goal of the petition is to "create safer roads and provide peace of mind to parents" saying:

"We are calling on the UK government to take immediate action to mandate the installation and use of seatbelts on all school buses.

Studies have consistently shown that seatbelts significantly reduce the risk of injury in road accidents.

By ensuring every child is properly secured during their journey, we can create safer roads and provide peace of mind to parents.

Let’s prioritize our children’s safety—sign the petition today and help us make this crucial change!"

Hornsea School & Language College acknowledged the incident on social media, thanking students for their behavior in challenging circumstances, as well as school staff and emergency services for their assistance at the scene.
