A major resurfacing scheme will begin on a number of roads in Scarborough town centre today and there will also be overnight closures of the A64 at Seamer this week.
The resurfacing work will take place on
- Queen Street between Castle Road and Newborough,
- on Newborough from Queen Street to St Helen’s Square
- and on Eastborough from St Helen’s Square to Foreshore Road.
North Yorkshire County Council say the work will take three weeks to complete.
They say that while much of the work will be carried out overnight there will be some full road closures during the day as well.
Queen Street will be closed from 7pm on October 19 until 5am on Wednesday, October 21. Overnight closures from 7pm to 5am will then be in place from Wednesday, October 21 to Monday, October 26, excluding the weekend.
Ground investigation work will be carried out from 7pm to 5am along Newborough and Eastborough on Monday, October 19. Resurfacing along these roads will then take place from the evening of Tuesday, October 27 to the morning of Friday, November 6. The closure will be between 7pm and 5am, week nights only.
Closures on all roads may need to be extended depending on the scale of the repairs.
Councillor Janet Jefferson, Member for the Castle Division, said:
“It is integral to ensure the main roads in Scarborough town centre are maintained to a very high standard. These are key routes for commuters, residents and visitors alike, so the work will be very welcome.”
County Councillor Don Mackenzie, Executive Member for Access, added:
“When resurfacing strategic routes we normally undertake the work overnight to avoid disruption during the day. However, the nature of these works mean that some full road closures will be required both day and night.
“The work is scheduled to last three weeks however we will have a better understanding of the extent of works when we remove the surface of the road. We will keep the public updated as we progress and apologise for any inconvenience these works will cause.”
Advance warning signs will be in place and there will be a signed diversion during the road closure period.
Operatives working on site will be observing all Government guidelines on safe social distancing.
In separate works the A64 will be closed between Musham Bank Road roundabout and Dunslow Road roundabout overnight while repairs are carried out to Seamer Station Bridge.
The closure will be from 8pm to 6am every night until Friday.
The Bridge itself will be closed 24/7 with a diversion via Musham Bank Road
