The Queen's Baton visited Scarborough, Robin Hood's Bay and Whitby yesterday ahead of the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
Crowds gathered along Scarborough's seafront to watch 17 baton-bearers from around the region and beyond do a leg of the relay, accompanied by a large convoy of vehichles and police escort.
Fylingdales School in Fylingthorpe was chosen to receive the baton for 10 minutes before 7 baton-bearers carried it from the school down to the beach in Robin Hood's Bay. The school hosted a community picnic and were joined by the Deputy Lord Liutenant.
Whitby's RNLI Lifeboat then took the baton along the coast and into Whitby Harbour, joined by a flotilla of small craft:
We were very proud of our youngest crew member Andy Brighton today who did a brilliant job of baton bearing in the Queen’s Baton Relay. Thanks for inviting us to take part! #QBR2022 pic.twitter.com/VmG9pkZOX5

3 nominated people carried the baton along Church Street, up the 199 steps and into the grounds of Whitby Abbey where hundreds of locals cheered its arrival.

There was singing from the Whitby Community Choir, Archery and other entertainment as people got their photo with the baton, which has a personal message from the Queen within it.
At 7:10pm the HM Coastguard Rescue Helicopter landed on the grass next to the Abbey, to the delight of the spectators. The crew collected the baton and flew it off to its next destination up the coast.
