Hunmanby Man to Walk Coast to Coast for Saint Catherine's

A Hunmanby man is taking on the Coast to Coast walk to raise money for Saint Catherine's in memory of his beloved wife Debbie, who died aged just 44.

From May 18 to 31, Adrian Luty will be walking from St Bee's in Cumbria to Robin Hood's Bay - a total of 190 miles.

Plus he will walk an extra day at the end - from Robin Hood's Bay to Saint Catherine's in Throxenby Lane, Scarborough, adding another 13 miles and arriving on June 1.

As is the tradition of the Coast to Coast walk, Adrian will carry a pebble for Debbie all the way from St Bee's to Robin Hood's Bay and an extra pebble for the hospice.

His wife Debbie sadly passed away in November 2020 following a two-year battle with cancer.

Adrian said:

"Saint Catherine's looked after and nursed Debbie through her last six weeks of life, something I will never be able to thank them enough for. Indeed they looked after us both, allowing me to stay with and by Debbie's side for the whole time.

"I cannot describe how we would have coped without this. The hospice and all its staff were just so incredibly compassionate, loving and caring. We are so lucky to have this facility in Scarborough and the work they do, both in the hospice and community is so incredibly special and amazing."

Adrian added that he wants to raise money for Saint Catherine's as the charity only receives around a third of its funding from Government and NHS commissioners. It costs around £5.5 million a year for the hospice to provide all of its services.

He said that people have already been asking if they can walk part of the route with him - particularly the last day from Robin Hood's Bay to the hospice.

Adrian explained:

"I would be proud to walk any part with anyone, but of course this will depend on restrictions due to the pandemic. Perhaps you could become a virtual walker, picking one or more of my days and instead getting sponsored to walk locally. Any of the above would give me so much support each day and collectively we could make a real difference."

Adrian has sourced some St Catherine's / Walk4Debbie T-shirts for those who may want to join the event. Please contact him direct for these.

Adrian said:

"It would be great to see pictures of people wearing the T-shirts and joining the event, but especially on the last day as the walk ends at Saint Catherine's in Scarborough."

Adrian has created a website and Just Giving page with more information about his walk and how people can get in touch and support his fundraising.
