The East Riding has been a pilot area for the NHS workplace health check which started in September last year.
Since launching over 1000 people have taken up the check within their place of work.
More than 50 businesses have held an NHS workplace health check event to enable their employees to undertake the assessment, aiming to prevent heart disease, stroke, diabetes, kidney disease and some cases of dementia amongst adults aged 30-74 years old.
The NHS health check assesses the seven main risk factors of smoking status, body mass index (BMI), alcohol consumption, physical activity level, cholesterol level, blood pressure, and blood sugar level. Advice and support is offered to reduce each person’s risk of cardiovascular disease, through behaviour change interventions and preventative action.
Businesses have ranged in size, and employees taking up the checks need to live or work in the East Riding. Around 51 percent of those who have completed a check have been men, which is a target demographic for the workplace health check, as men are less likely to take time away from work to prioritise their health.
One of the local businesses that held a workplace event was Sargent Electrical. HR Director, Kelly McCorkindale said:
“We participated in the pilot at our workplace, and the feedback from our employees has been overwhelmingly positive. The checks provided valuable insights into their health and have prompted a wave of positive lifestyle adjustments, from making dietary changes to increasing physical activity.
“The convenience of having these checks done at the workplace made it easy for everyone to participate, and the professional and friendly staff made the experience comfortable and informative. We are thrilled with the fantastic feedback and the positive impact these health checks have had on our team.”
Swift Caravans held an event and one of their employees said:
“I’d been a little bit worried about a couple of health things. The overall results were positive, and it helped put my mind at ease. I still need to do a bit more to look after myself better, but this helped give me the direction to go in.”
An employee at Hull University said:
“It was really helpful being able to access this at my place of work. It was great to be able to get my cholesterol checked too, something I’ve not had tested before. I also knew my issues with weight, but it kept me motivated having joined the gym a few months ago. I had a good, informed chat about diet too.”
ABI UK held an event and the company said:
“Lewis conducted our NHS Workplace Health Checks and he delivered an exceptional blend of professionalism and approachability. The positive uptake of the health checks meant that Lewis was completing back-to-back appointments with little shuffle room, all while accommodating our workforce around their breaks.”
Councillor Jonathan Owen, cabinet member for adults, health and care said:
“We aim to make healthy choices as easy as possible for our residents. Workplaces that host events are really helping their employees to live well for longer.”
The pilot runs until 31 March and has been funded by the Department for Health and Social Care (DHSC).
Any workplace in the East Riding, from small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), micro-enterprises, to large public sector organisations can host workplace NHS health checks at any time. For information email: healthatwork@eastriding.gov.uk
