Humberside Police Send Diver to Frozen Lake

The underwater search unit have been visiting local ponds and lakes following reports of people venturing on to the ice.

Humberside Police say that following reports of people venturing onto frozen water across the force area yesterday (Thursday 15 December) their Underwater Search Unit have been visiting local parks, ponds and nature reserves where bodies of water have frozen over.

The team patrolled key areas and advised members of the public on the dangers associated with the extremely cold and frozen waters.

One of the specialists trained divers, wearing his advance diving equipment highlighted the dangers, walking onto a frozen pond, causing the ice to break beneath him quickly, showcasing how unstable and thin the ice can be.

Head of Special Operations Unit Superintendent Lee Edwards spoke about the dangers of frozen water:

“Many people love to go walking around this time of year and within our force area we have some fantastic lakes, rivers, canals and ponds. However, I urge people to please stay away from open water, especially frozen water, to ensure the safety of themselves, their families and those around them.

“I share the advice of Humberside Fire and Rescue and remind parents, guardians and children themselves, that bodies of frozen water may look like fun places to play, but can become potentially lethal for those who venture onto the ice.

“Lakes, ponds and certain stretches of rivers may look as if they will support the weight of people or animals, but sadly that is not always the case. The added hazards are the slippery banks and the ice-cold temperature of the water should an incident occur.

“They have a dedicated page of advice around this on their website and I would urge people to read this and take their concerns seriously.”
