Humberside Police are currently recruiting for Community Safety Mounted Volunteers to patrol the community.
The mounted volunteers will play an active role in promoting crime prevention and sharing information regarding reported incidents to help rural communities feel safer. Their key responsibilities will include assisting in providing a high-visibility mounted presence to reassure rural areas and act as "the eyes and ears of the community". Furthermore, they will work to reduce the opportunity for crime by increasing crime prevention advice and awareness.
The initiative aims to bolster community safety within the Hull & East Riding area. According to Humberside Police, the goal of these volunteer roles is to "provide reassurance to residents, promoting trust and confidence in the police whilst enhancing relationships between the police and the community".
Volunteers will be expected to "provide Crime Prevention Advice where appropriate and report any unusual/suspicious activity and road-related matters". They will also "engage with members of the rural community and help in developing positive relationships between the police and the community". Collaboration is a key aspect of the role, with volunteers expected to "share information with Humberside Police and engage with the Rural Task Force, Neighbourhood Policing Teams and local farm/country/horse watch schemes".
The role also involves attending community events to "promote the role and raise awareness of equine and rural related crime". Volunteers will need to "update Duty Sheet with volunteer hours and activities" and "attend and complete relevant training for the role".
Humberside Police have outlined specific requirements for applicants. Individuals must "own, or have access to a suitable horse to undertake mounted rural patrols". They should also have "an interest in preventing Rural, Equine and Wildlife Crime". Prospective volunteers must have "attained the British Horse Society Ride Safe Award or be willing to undertake it" and possess a "minimum 5 years of riding experience which includes both riding on a highway and rural (open farmland/bridleways etc)". Successful applicants will also be "willing to undertake an induction and horse/equipment checks as required".
For those interested in learning more about the opportunity, Humberside Police held a virtual information evening on Thursday, 3rd April 2025.
