Scarborough and Ryedale Mountain Rescue Team have been helping to train a new rescue dog.
Slate is being trained to become a Mountain Rescue Search Dogs England search dog and the training involves some members of the local volunteer rescue team taking up well hidden positions in the undergrowth.
Slate has been out training on the North York Moors with his owner and handler Sarah.
Sarah was working on Slate being able to tell her when he has found somebody so 3 members of the Scarborough and Ryedale Mountain Rescue Team were sent to hide in the undergrowth and Slate was then sent to find them and then tell Sarah where they were.
Mountain Rescue Search Dogs England is a charity training Mountain Rescue volunteers & their dogs, to find vulnerable missing people in the wild & remote places of the UK since 1971.
MRSD say:
"we train our dogs as 'Non discriminatory air scenting' search dogs. That is to say they are not given a scent article with the scent of a particular person, but are searching for any human scent in the air."
"Our search dogs are trained to find and react to human scent and will reliably find items of clothing with human scent on them as well as human beings. "
"we teach Mountain Rescue personnel to train Mountain Rescue Search Dogs across England"
After the training session, Slate got to play with his favourite ball as a reward, the team say they "its obvious that he loves his training !"
