Group Trying to Save Scarborough 's Cask Pub Seek Pledges of Support

The group trying to save Scarborough's Cask pub are asking local people to pledge their support for the project.

Star Pubs & Bars announced in early January they intend to sell the building leaving the future of the pub in limbo.

Since then a group has formed to try and save the pub and has managed to get it listed as an asset of community value.

Landlady Andrea Allison says that's an important step.

The Cask Community Benefit Society has been formed to try and raise enough money to buy the building and enable it to continue operating as a pub.

Andrea says the current appeal is for local people and organisations to pledge their support:

Andrea says the building has been put up for sale as the current owners feel unable to carry out renovations needed to parts of the building.

Andrea says that when the news of the potential sale was announced the locals rallied round to come up with a plan to try and save the pub.

If the Community Benefit Society did manage to buy the building then the idea would be for the pub to carry on running as it does at the moment, something Andrea says she is committed to.

The Cask Community Benefit Society has created a pledge form for those who are interested in saving the building. They say that this is to gauge the levels of interest and isn't legally binding.

The group say:

"We hope to be able to buy The Cask on behalf of the community, for it to be run as a genuine community asset, generating a range of benefits for the local community and visitors alike.

We plan to publish our Business Plan and a Community Share Offer in the near future, but before we do so, we need to assess the level of financial support we are likely to be able to secure through a Community Share Offer, and so we are now asking for pledges of support.

Our Community Share Offer will enable individuals (aged 18 or over) and/or corporate bodies to buy shares in the Society, making them a member of the society and giving them a vote at the Annual General Meeting.

Our Community Share Offer will also co-fund the project to purchase and refurbish the building, which will also be supported by a combination of grant funding, donations, other fundraising activities and a loan facility. We are working with Plunkett UK to benefit from their specialist advice, bursary support and financial assistance for the purchase.

Whilst those pledging support will be under no obligation to purchase shares once the Community Share Offer is issued, we do ask that you think carefully about the amount you wish to pledge, as we will use this information to assess the viability of our plans; we do not want to risk misleading stakeholders about the level of support from within the community."
