Great Big Green Week Launches on Yorkshire Coast

A week of green activities is launching on the Yorkshire Coast this weekend.

The Great Big Green Week is a national event which starts on Saturday and runs for a week.

Organisers say it will be the largest event for climate and nature ever seen in the UK, with thousands of events will celebrating how communities are taking action to tackle climate change and protect green spaces, and encourage others to get involved too.

The national charity behind the event say:

We are seeing the impacts of extreme weather events caused by climate change on the people and places we love both here in the UK and abroad. The time is now to do everything we can to protect them. Climate change is the fight of our lifetime.

This year, we in the UK have a huge opportunity to raise the ambition of plans to tackle climate change at home and abroad. The UK is hosting a major UN climate summit, known as COP26, in Glasgow this November. This means parliament and local authorities alike want to be seen as ambitious in tackling climate change.

The Time is Now for a Great Big Green Week that sets the stage for the most ambitious climate summit ever.

The events will range from art installations, to concerts to community stalls, to climate cafes, and everything in between; hosted by teachers, bus drivers, sport clubs, artists, community groups, places of worship, builders and anyone who cares about climate change.

On the Yorkshire Coast a series of litter picks, talks, films and workshops will be taking place over the next seven days.

David Stone from Coast and Vale Community action has been helping co-ordinate some of the activity.

Other events taking place include tours of the Hydro Electric power station at Ruswarp, an Eco Summit in Bridlington, updates on the lobster hatchery in Whitby and an inclusive social bike ride in Filey.

David Stone says there are lots of ways people can get involved and there has been a lot of interest in the week so far.

A full list of the events taking place can be found on the CAVCA website https://cavca.org.uk/the-great-big-green-week/
