The government have confirmed the funding for the York museum after a review of commitments made by the previous government.
York's National Railway Museum say that following a period of review, the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government has confirmed a £15 million investment to the National Railway Museum’s transformative masterplan and Central Hall project.
The museum say that the "significant sum" will safeguard the museum’s plans for visitor growth, the future expansion of its estate and preservation of its collections, inspiring the next generation with the past, present and future of the railways.
Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner met Director of the National Railway Museum, Craig Bentley last week, along with David Skaith, Mayor of York and North Yorkshire, and Leader of the Council, Claire Douglas, to congratulate the team.
Today’s funding announcement follows a review by the Government of a commitment made in spring 2024 by the previous Conservative administration. Building on an earlier investment of £18.6 million in 2019 under the Cultural Investment Fund, from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport.
Through the National Railway Museum’s masterplan, around £100 million is being invested in capital projects that will extend and improve both the York museum and its sister site Locomotion in Shildon, County Durham. Both museums are part of the Science Museum Group.
The National Railway Museum is the cultural heart of York Central, a 45-hectare city-wide regeneration scheme turning underused railway land into a distinctive new city quarter with residential neighbourhoods, civic spaces, and high-quality commercial real estate in one of the UK’s most historic and desirable cities.
Director Craig Bentley said:
“It was a pleasure to welcome the Deputy Prime Minister to the National Railway Museum today and demonstrate how this £15 million investment will transform this much-loved site. This investment is pivotal to our plans for growth and to develop the museum as a place which is globally relevant, inspiring hundreds of thousands more visitors every year and fulfilling our role as the cultural gateway to York Central.”
Sir Ian Blatchford, Chief Executive and Director of the Science Museum Group said:
“This confirmation of the £15 million investment in our ambitious plans for the National Railway Museum represents a strong vote of confidence in the transformative work underway right across the Science Museum Group.”
Mayor of York and North Yorkshire David Skaith, said:
"It’s fabulous to see the Deputy Prime Minister coming to the National Railway Museum to announce that the £15million investment is secure.
We've argued the case for this funding with Government since it announced a review last year. This decision shows the faith the Government has in York and North Yorkshire to deliver growth.
The NRM can now go on to achieve its ambition to become the world’s railway museum, as well as being an integral part of the York Central project, which in-turn will bring jobs, homes and investment to York and North Yorkshire."
