Fundraising Event for Ravenscar Girl Awaiting Heart Transplant

A fundraising event to support Penelope, a young girl from Ravenscar who is battling a serious heart condition is being held in Snainton tonight.

The Bingo event aims to raise funds for Penelope's family and other families facing similar situations through Penelope's Little Heart Foundation.

Penelope was diagnosed with Dilated Cardiomyopathy when she was just 16 days old. Her condition worsened, leading to a cardiac arrest, and she now relies on a mechanical heart, known as a Berlin heart.

According to Penelope's father, Jordan, the family started fundraising when it became clear that the mechanical heart Penelope needed was not available in the UK at that time. The family launched a fundraising campaign with a target of £120,000, which was achieved in just three days. They are now continuing the funding to help Penelope as she waits for a full heart transplant and to support other children in similar situations.

Tonight's fundraising event, a bingo night, has been organised by Nicky Jackson and takes place at Snainton Village Hall at 7:30 pm (Thursday February 27th). The event was originally planned for Ayton Village Hall but was moved to accommodate the high level of interest.

Nicky says she wanted to do something to help Penelope's family.

Nikki says she has been in regular contact with the family and says Penelope is enjoying new experiences.

Penelope's dad, Jordan, says that having the artificial Berlin heart should prepare Penelope well for the full transplant and reduce her recovery time. The family has established Penelope's Little Heart Foundation to support other children and families facing similar heart conditions. Both Jordan and his wife are in the army and have taken time off work to be in London with Penelope. They are also expecting another daughter in early April.

Jordan remains optimistic and has been in contact with others in similar situations, who have encouraged him to "keep going". The family are also using their platform to raise awareness about the importance of organ and blood donation.

Nicky Jackson says the support for tonight's event has been encouraging, so much so that they had to switch the venue to the larger Snainton Village Hall because she was worried about having to turn people away. Nikki says local businesses have been very generous in supporting the event and providing prizes for the raffle.

The event gets underway at Snainton Village hall at 7:30pm. It cost £5 to enter, which includes one bingo book, and supper. Guests can take their own alcohol. Extra bingo books are available for £1 each.
