A proposal to create a Sea Safe swimming zone in Scarborough has been backed by local councillors.
They've allocated £20,000 to a feasibility study looking at the potential for some form of seawater pool in the town, possibly using a series of pontoons.
Councillor Rich Maw is backing the project.
The proposal comes amidst growing popularity of wild swimming, which provides significant health and well-being benefits.
Councillor Maw, highlighted the sport's potential to increase engagement with the sea, improve accessibility for all, and make Scarborough a more inclusive destination for residents and tourists alike.
Councillor Maw says the idea has come from local wild swimmers, and has been successfully delivered elsewhere in the country.
The feasibility study aims to address the current lack of facilities for sea swimmers beyond lifeguards in both the South and North Bay. The study will examine various options, including the potential for pontoons or a seawater pool, similar to the successful trial project in Plymouth. It will also explore the best location for such an investment, the most viable operational model, expected capital investment, and ongoing revenue implications.
Councillor Heather Phillips also expressed strong support for any initiative that makes sea swimming more accessible.
The feasibility study was recommended for endorsement by the council officers following in-depth conversations with stakeholders and experts and was approved by North Yorkshire Council's Scarborough and Whitby Area Committee. The feasibility study is expected to commence in November 2024, with a final report expected in 2025.
