Scarborough based McCain has partnered with George Pindar School to spark a lifetime love of reading, by gifting a book to all their Year 7 students
When the BookTrust could no longer provide their BookBuzz programme for free, McCain Foods a neighbour to the school, stepped in to sponsor the 150 books.
BookTrust, the UK’s largest children’s reading charity, previously ran a scheme to offer free books to schools who are part of the opportunities area programme, aiming to help more children and young people achieve their full potential, in areas facing the biggest challenges to social mobility.
Now, during the COVID-19 pandemic organisers say it’s even more important for children and families to keep learning together and for students to catch-up on what they’ve missed during lockdown. They say..
"What better way to do this, then through fiction, which has the power to lift us out of scrolling news headlines and encourage independent reading."
Charlotte Pick, Internal Communications Business Partner from McCain commented on the sponsorship saying:
“As a family business, we are passionate about supporting our community, so were delighted to be asked to help a secondary school here on our doorstep.
A student that can read is given the chance to become a problem solver, an engaged and productive worker, and a life-long learner, and it’s proven that good literacy leads to brighter future prospects and entry to further education.”
Thanks to the McCain sponsorship, each year seven student was able to choose from 17 books, to keep and take home, with a wide variety of titles, from non-fiction reads for curious minds, to fast-paced page-turners.
Year 7 student, Ellie, said:
"I was so happy to get my book this morning. I've already read the first few pages and it seems like a really exciting story. It was a lovely surprise that McCain paid for the books, and I'm really thankful to them."
The books arrived last week and received a period of quarantine, prior to them been distributed to class groups by George Pindar staff, who were masked and gloved to ensure Covid compliance.
