Flood Warnings Issued For Yorkshire Coast Due To Spring Tides

The Flood Warnings are in force for this afternoon's high tide and follows some overtopping last night.

3 Flood Warnings have this morning being issued for the Yorkshire Coast ahead of this afternoon's high spring tide.

One is for Whitby and the others for Bridlington.

Whitby's Flood Warning reads:

This Flood Warning remains in place due to strong winds, surge and high spring tides on the coast over the coming days. Overtopping waves and flooding from high sea levels is possible today, Tuesday 09/04/24 between 4.45PM and 5.45PM. Areas most at risk include the Whitby Harbour area including Abrahams Quay, Pier Road, New Quay Road, Church Street, Campion Dock and Bagdale Road. We are expecting higher than normal tides over the next few days and as a result may issue further alerts/warnings. We will continue to monitor levels closely. Stay away from beaches, promenades, coastal footpaths and roads as the expected large waves and sea spray will be dangerous. Consider enacting your flood plan. This message will be updated by 9PM on Tuesday 09/04/24, or as the situation changes. Flood warning area: Whitby harbour area including Abrahams Quay, Pier Road, New Quay Road, Church Street, Campion Dock and Bagdale Road.

For Bridlington, there are 2 Flood Warnings, one for Harbour Road and the Floral Pavilion and also one for the South Pier area:

Areas most at risk include the North side of the dock area, properties on Harbour Road and the Floral Pavilion. We are expecting higher than normal tides over the next few days and may issue further alerts/warnings. Last night, video was shared  on social media of the sea overtopping Harbour Road on Bridlington Harbour, and also some overtopping of the North Wharf at Scarborough Harbour. This afternoon's high tide is expected to be slightly higher than yesterdays.

A flood warning is also in place for the North Sea Coast at Hornsea where wave and spray overtopping is possible today between 5PM and 8PM.

The Environment Agency say:

"This could cause some localised flooding. Areas most at risk of flooding include Marine Drive, along South Promenade, Hornsea Burton Road and along Stream Dike and Foss Beck.

We are expecting higher than normal tides over the coming days and as a result we may issue further alerts/warnings.

We will continue to monitor the situation closely. Stay away from beaches, promenades, coastal footpaths and roads as the waves and sea spray could be dangerous."
