Filey lifeboat's safety officer has issued a stark warning after an increase in people being cut off at Filey Brigg.
With the increase in visitor numbers, due to people taking holidays at home, RNLI Filey are noticing an increase in the number of calls we are receiving to assist people either being cut off by the tide or slipping and receiving serious injuries whilst walking on Filey Brigg.
RNLI Filey’s Volunteer Crew Members have launched their Inshore D Class Lifeboat The Rotarian on 7 occasions this summer to rescue a total 15 people who have either been cut off by the tide or have slipped and been injured whilst walking on Filey Brigg.
RNLI Filey’s Water Safety Team would like to remind people intending to walk out on to the Brigg that they should check the tide times before setting out and to ensure that they leave the area of the Brigg at least two hours before high tide.
Volunteer RNLI Water Safety Advisor Robbie McKennan warns that the rocky surface of Filey Brigg is always very slippery and walkers should bear the following advice in mind:
Be wary of all edges around the sea and waterside.
Always wear appropriate footwear...
Always let someone know where you are going and when you expect to be back.
Take care when walking in dark and slippery conditions.
Always take a means of calling for help.
Always check the weather and tides.
