A spectacular fireworks display is one of the highlights of Whitby's Christmas Festival today.

Whitby's Christmas Festival is taking place this weekend, there is a Christmas market and fair on Marina Front Car Park and the This is the Coast stage has a programme of musical entertainment.

Deputy town Clerk, Anne Cowey says tonight's highlight will be the festive fireworks display.

The town's Christmas lights were turned on last night at the festivals opening event which also saw performances from Stakesby School Choir, Whitby Community Choir and Dire Staithes.

Today's entertainment on the This is the Coast Stage includes The Esk Valley Concert Band, The Whitby Jazz Collective and Charlie Brown.

Tonight's fireworks at 7:45pm will follow a [performance by Falsetto Frank and The Longmen which gets underway at 6pm.

Throughout the weekend Father Christmas and his cheeky helpers are on site, courtesy of Whitby Endeavour Rotary. Visits to Santa are free, but any donations are welcome and will be used to support local good causes.

Festive performers will be in action around the Festival site across the weekend with a larger-than-life Fairy Godmother roaming the site throughout Friday evening, entertaining visitors and offering 'advice'. On Saturday and Sunday, be amazed by Felix Brent, an English Gent, performing tricks on his Victorian Penny Farthing.
