East Riding Council encourages residents this Christmas to only purchase pets from licensed breeders
East Riding of Yorkshire council is highlighting the importance of responsible pet ownership and purchasing this Christmas. They says that while this is a popular time to purchase a new pet, it is vital to recognise that they are a long-term commitment.
The council says:
- Residents should ensure they are ready and able to commit to the responsibilities that come with caring for an animal, before purchasing one.
- It is also vital to only purchase animals from licensed breeders, or rescue shelters, to make sure that animal welfare standards are upheld.
By law, all business premises must hold a licence to sell animals as pets and to breed dogs for sale. This includes from residential properties.
It is recommended to look for licensing information on the council’s website, or ask for proof of licence, when visiting premises. If there are concerns over a breeder, it is recommended to walk away and not to feel pressured into buying.
Given the high demand for pets, responsible breeders may now have waiting lists for dogs and cats. However, it is vital to only buy a healthy animal that has been bred in good welfare conditions.
Councillor Lyn Healing, East Riding of Yorkshire Council cabinet member for communities and public protection said
“Many people purchase pets in the run up to Christmas, but it is important to make sure they can be properly looked after the holiday period ends.
"It is also essential to only buy pets from registered breeders, to make sure that the animals are healthy and well-treated. Our licensing team are dedicated to upholding animal welfare standards, and I encourage residents to report any concerns about irresponsible or unregistered animal breeding.”
