East Riding of Yorkshire Council Crowned Council of the Year

East Riding of Yorkshire Council has been crowned overall council of the year in the Association for Public Service Excellence Awards.

The council beat off competition from Aberdeen City Council, Cambridge City Council, Mid & East Antrim Borough Council, Nottingham City Council and Swansea City Council to win the top accolade at the annual awards, which celebrate outstanding achievement and innovation within local government.

It was also a double celebration as, for the second year in a row, the council's waste and recycling team were crowned service team of the year.

Councillor Richard Burton, leader of East Riding of Yorkshire Council, was delighted with the two awards.

He said:

"The prestigious title of council of the year comes at the end of what has been an incredibly difficult year for both staff and residents.

"With huge thanks, I recognise the hard work everyone within the council has contributed and together we have provided the very best of local government services with quality, pride and respect.

"I would also like to offer my congratulations to the waste and recycling team who consistently prove they are the best in the country as well as those other service teams who were APSE finalists."

APSE Chief Executive Paul O'Brien said:

"The overall council of the year in service delivery is a unique way of recognising excellence in local frontline services.

"These are the services that our communities experience day in and day out at the neighbourhood level.

"To win this award, amongst other local council peers, is an exceptional honour. My congratulations to East Riding of Yorkshire - this is so well deserved and a credit to all'.

Other East Riding of Yorkshire Council service teams to make the final were:

  • Registration and Celebration Services in Revenue and Procurement
  • Environmental and Waste Services in Streetscene (x 2)
  • Fleet Services in Streetscene
  • Civil Engineering Services in Infrastructure and Facilities
  • Road Safety and Housing Services, in Housing, Transportation and Public Protection
