Drivers Ignoring Landslip Closure in Hackness

Drivers are being urged to adhere to the road closure on Broxa Lane in Hackness after last week’s landslip rendered the route unsafe.

Over the weekend highways teams were called to re-erect barriers and signs which were removed by people choosing to drive through the closure.

The County Council will soon begin work to stabilise the landslip and repair the road. The public will be updated when a timescale has been identified.

In the meantime drivers are reminded of the dangers of ignoring road closures and are being urged to find an alternative route.

Local member Councillor Derek Bastiman said:

“It’s disheartening to see a few people going out of their way to remove the barriers and signs to drive along an unsafe road. The large crack which has appeared remains unstable and could see further damage.

“It is not only illegal under the Road Traffic Act, but puts other drivers using the road at risk as the signs will not be in place to warn of the danger.”

County Councillor Don Mackenzie, Executive Member for Access, added:

“Drivers may look at the damage and decide to take the risk to cut their journey time but please be assured it is not safe to do so.

“We only close roads when deemed absolutely necessary as we have a commitment to protect the safety of all road users. We apologise for the inconvenience the closure is causing but please be assured our teams will be on site as soon as possible to carry out repairs.”
