Double Call Out for Scarborough and Ryedale Mountain Rescue Team

The Scarborough and Ryedale Mountain Rescue Team were called out to two incidents on Tuesday.

At just before 12:30 they were called by Yorkshire Ambulance Service to reports of a lady who had sustained and ankle injury on a walk between Goathland and Beck Hole. After treatment on scene the lady was delivered to a Dual Crewed Ambulance for transportation to definitive medical care.

Half an hour later the team were were given a second tasking to an injured mountain biker on the Dalby Forest Red Route. Whilst they had a good known location, poor cellular coverage meant the Ambulance Service had been unable to ascertain the extent of the injuries. Given the location and the two incidents occurring at the same time the rescue team requested assistance from North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service to help with the carry out with Fire crews attending from both Whitby and the volunteer station in Goathland.

The Mountain Rescue Team said:

"One of our Incident Controllers was diverted from travelling to the Goathland incident with a Land Rover Ambulance to make an initial assessment of the situation. It materialised that the lady had taken a fall off her bike from a boardwalk bridge into a gully then, assisted by her partner, had self rescued out of the gully onto a track but was then unable to weight bare on her right leg and was laid on the ground in significant discomfort when we arrived.  After initial assessment and treatment and as additional team members arrived, she was transferred to a casualty bag and vacuum mattress then carried about 1km through heavy rain to a waiting ambulance.

We had 11 team members on scene, some arriving after clearing the Goathland incident and an Incident Controller at home managing both incidents.  We would like to thank the two mountain bikers who were first on scene, raised the alarm and stayed on to help until we had sufficient team members on scene and also thank the Forest Rangers for confirming we had vehicle access to the scene.

The team vehicles were returned to base, cleaned and restocked by 15:35 ready for the next shout.  We will be visiting Scarbrough A&E over the next few hours to recover all our equipment which went with the two patients."
