Did the Earth Move For You? Reports of Loud Bang on Yorkshire Coast

Experts think is was more likely a sonic event rather than an earthquake.

Twitter users have been reporting experiencing a loud bang and a large shudder backcross parts of the Yorkshire Coast and North Yorkshire.

The event occurred just before 4pm.

The British Geological Survey say data from the BGS seismic networks in the region were examined and signals consistent with a possible sonic origin were recorded between 15:47:42s and 15:49:23s UTC on several stations, on the BGS seismic network, in North Yorkshire.

The BGS say they have received a number of reports from residents in North Yorkshire who reported an event at approximately 15:50 UTC today.

Reports described "house shook and conservatory creaked", "a low rumble ending in a thud", "windows rattled" and "felt the ground tremble".

The BGS say the reports received are also consistent with historical observations received for previous events with a sonic origin.

The BGS say people who may have felt a quake can report the incident using their online form here http://www.earthquakes.bgs.ac.uk/questionnaire/EqQuestIntro.html

A number of Seismographs in the area show some activity at around 4pm.

Reports of the event have come from a wide area of North Yorkshire
