Bridlington Town play at the Mounting Systems Stadium for the first and only time this month on Saturday, hosting Northern Premier League East relegation rivals Sherwood Colliery.
Results looked on the up for the Seasiders, as they earned back-to-back victories, winning 3-1 and 3-2 against Ashington AFC and Pontefract Collieries, respectively.
However, Bridlington fell to a disappointing 4-0 defeat on the road to Consett AFC last time out. Josh Barrett, who has been excellent playing as a striker since returning from an ACL injury, netted three times during the two victories, though he was absent for the Consett loss.
Head-coach Mike Thompson said:
“He’s ill. (It’s) really unfortunate for us - he’s got a chest infection. We missed him today. We tried to go with the same remit of playing Tom (Allan) up there, and working off his flicks, and it’s just not worked for us.”
On the loss as a whole, Thompson added:
“It’s a strange one, we’ve been beaten 4-0 and we’ve played a lot worse and only been beaten 1-0 or 2-1.
“It took us too long to work out their system and how they played. I think when we did that we had more joy, but the only problem was that we were 3-0 down.”
That three goal deficit came just 20 minutes in, with Brandon Holdsworth scoring twice, either side of David Allasan’s 13th minute strike.
As the Bridlington gaffer mentions, his side did then improve, as it took until the 92nd minute for Matthew Todd to find the Steelmen’s fourth.
One of the only positives to take from the game was the return of Michael Coulson, who managed half an hour off the bench following a two game layoff with a knee injury.
That being said, Bridlington did leave the game with another medical concern, as Matty Dixon was forced off after just 36 minutes. Thompson commented:
“It’s his hamstring - we don’t know how bad it is. He felt it when he had a little burst, so Josh is going to have to look at that.
“We don’t think it’s gone, because he’d have known straight away, but it’s just how problematic it’s going to be for him moving forward, so we’re going to have to assess it.”
The Seasiders remained in 19th after the defeat, level on 33 points with Heaton Stannington outside the drop zone, whom they will face after Sherwood.
It’s a crucial two games at a crucial stage of the season, with Sherwood occupying 21st place and only Sheffield FC sit below them.
A victory, though, for the visitors would take them to within a point of Bridlington, with two games in hand on the Seasiders.
‘The Wood’ also conceded four goals last weekend, three of which came in the final 10 minutes, ultimately losing 4-1 at home against Brighouse Town, who are also struggling at the wrong end of the table.
Earlier in the season, Bridlington beat Saturday’s opponents 2-0, thanks to goals either side of the interval from Charlie Winfield and captain Simon Heslop.
It was the first time the Seasiders have faced Sherwood at this level, as they earned promotion to step four having won the United Counties Premier Division North last campaign.
