Criticism of £10k for Scarborough 400th Birthday Festival

A decision to spend just over ten thousand pounds on the early stages of creating a 400th birthday festival for Scarborough has been criticised by a Whitby councillor.

The money would be used to look at whether Scarborough's historic spa pump room could be revealed to the public as part celebrations in 2026.

Councillor Neil Swannick doesn't think it's a good use of the council's funds, and has questioned whether the Spa water would be useable.

However Scarborough Councillor, Rich Maw, feels that a 400th Birthday festival for Scarborough would bring economic benefit to the town. He thinks the event in 2026 should be used to promote the resort

£10,500 has been allocated to carry out initial work looking at the idea of revealing the historic spa pump room as part of the event.

Councillor Maw says he was disappointed by a suggestion that the money shouldn't be spent.

The money will be used to undertake feasibility and scoping activity around the original Scarborough Spa Pump to support the development of plans ahead of the 2026 anniversary of Scarborough becoming a spa town. The Scarborough Spa plan will be part of a wider programme of activity commemorating this milestone for Scarborough.

It's expected that the initial work will involve obtaining a structural engineer assessment of the pump, the removal of water ingress to the pump location, 3D scanning of the pump for use in interpretation/immersive VR works and a feasibility study assessing interpretation options located at the Spa building.
