Council Working with Contractors and Club on Scarborough Football Pitch Problems

North Yorkshire Council says it is talking to the builders of the Scarborough Sports Village 3G Pitch which has failed leaving Scarborough Athletic without a home ground for next season.

North Yorkshire Council has confirmed that it could take 44 weeks and three million pounds to repair the 3G pitch at Scarborough Sports Village.

It means Scarborough Athletic will need to find an alternative home ground for most of next season, something the clubs board confirmed they are already working on in a statement released yesterday.

The council's Corporate Director for Community Development - Nic Harne - says they are in discussion with the contractors who built the pitch eight years ago.

"We're working with the original contractors. A pitch of this age should not have failed in such a way. And we're just trying to understand what has happened to it underneath the ground and what a responsibility the original contractors had in that.

As you can appreciate, this is a rapidly emerging situation and we're entering those talks with the contractors at the moment.

We're absolutely committed to moving this forward as quickly as we can.

We understand how devastating and challenging this is for the football club but we're looking to work collectively together  it's still an emerging situation as to what works would actually need to take place. But we commit and endeavor to work with the club to try and minimize the impact for them as much as it's possible to do so."

The scale of the work required means that Scarborough Athletic are realistically going to need a new home ground next season. Nic Harne was asked if there is anything the council can do to help with any temporary relocation.

"We're working with the club we're talking with them regularly.

That needs to be really led by the club around what's gonna work for them. , we're really willing to support them where we can do so and work with them to find something that could work for them.

we're working with the council executive to look to secure the funds to deliver the program and improvement works, and we'd hope to be able to come out very soon to  state what that program will look like over the coming weeks.

We understand how important the football club is to local community.

It's got great support and following, and our aim is to work alongside the club and support them where we can during this really difficult time."

In an interview with This is the Coast, Nic Harne confirmed the figures we first reported last week around then length of time it will take to carry out the repair works and the potential overall cost.

"The relaying of a pitch like this should cost somewhere around 300,000 pounds or so. However, with the additional structural and drainage works, we believe that's gonna be an excessive 3 million pounds and a really extensive program to ensure the works take place.

we had hope to, a relaying of the surface could take place during the summer break period. But if these significant structural and drainage works need to take place we estimate that might take around 44 weeks to complete and obviously very disruptive to the season."
