The Scarborough Community Fridge is needing volunteers and food donations ahead of its mid-October opening at The Street.
Jo Claire-Young explains why the Community Fridge is coming to Scarborough:
"More and more, food waste is entering our landfill sites with much of it still being perfectly safe to eat. This problem is of great concern to many of us, so we are hoping to launch an exciting new project here in Scarborough, based at the Street. This is being taken on by members of our own community, to work in partnership with local retailers, with the aim towards reducing the amount of food waste from our town. There are already community fridges in Malton & Pickering which have proven a huge success by redistributing hundreds of tonnes of food.
Our aim is a simple one. Local cafes, deli, shops and supermarkets pass on any unsaleable food, which is past it’s sell by date, but still within its use by date food to our project. This food is made freely available for collection to ANYONE regardless of status or social standing – it is hoped that many residents from Scarborough and the surrounding areas will make use of the donated items. We are looking for people who would like to help us get this worthwhile project of the ground – could this be you?
