Are Coastal town's and villages becoming too reliant on Post Offices as banking goes more digital?
That's the concern of local councillors who say the move to a cashless society isn't good news for rural and coastal communities with older populations and smaller businesses.
Filey Councillor Sam Cross is worried some people would get left behind if post offices disappeared.
North Yorkshire Councillors have been discussing the impact of bank closures on seaside towns and villages and have expressed concerns that coastal communities are becoming too reliant on post offices.
Councillor Alyson Baker says the effect is greater in areas with older populations.
Hunmanby & Sherburn Councillor , Michelle Donohue-Moncrieff feels there is a tension between post offices needing to be viable businesses and becoming increasingly viewed as a public service.
Members of North Yorkshire Council's Thirsk, Malton and Filey Area Committee are planning to invite the Post Office to attend their next meeting to discuss issues around post office provision in Helmsley and the use of mobile post offices, they are also asking the council's scrutiny committee to look at the wider issues surrounding post office provision in rural communities.
