Whitby's Cliff Lift on North Terrace and Scarborough's Spa Cliff Lift are both to remain closed for the foreseeable future as the Borough Council battles with maintenance issues.
Problems have been found with both lifts, Council Director Nick Edwards says engineers have been on site this week.
Whitby’s lift, on North Terrace, is in a shaft within the cliff. Water has been getting into the shaft for many years but more recently the situation, combined with the humid environment, has worsened.
The council say it is now at a point where elements of the lift structure are suffering from corrosion and that even new parts fitted at the beginning of one season they require replacing the following year. The Borough Council say they are working on a solution but in the meantime the lift will remain closed.
In Scarborough, council engineers discovered an issue with the Spa Cliff lift during a routine inspection. The council reports:
"The main issue we need to address is the concrete roof of the motor room and the steelwork that supports it. Both are showing signs of deterioration.
The motor room sits beneath the top station which complicates the situation, so we have asked a specialist engineer to come up with a fix.
Like Whitby, the lift will have to be remain closed for the time being."
Borough Council Director Nick Edwards says the issues are complicated.
The Borough Council says it is now looking at ways of helping passengers – specifically those with mobility issues – to get between the top and bottom of both cliffs.
