Christmas Ice Rink for Scarborough

It’ll be a case of ‘ice to see you’ on the Yorkshire coast this winter as Scarborough gets its own real ice rink.

It’s being provided as part of the Christmas ‘sparkle’ programme of seasonal events taking place across the borough.

The rink will be constructed on North Street car park in Scarborough as a way of attracting residents and visitors into the town centre.

Children will be able to book and use ‘penguin skate aids’ to help them build their confidence and the rink will have dedicated facilities for visitors with mobility issues, including wheelchair users.

Richard Grunwell, chairman of the Scarborough Town Team, said:

"We’ve wanted to attract an ice rink in the town centre for Christmas for some time.  It is fantastic that this year we will see this actually happen.

“The town team has been working alongside the council to develop a programme of events and activity to encourage residents and visitors into the town centre to enjoy our hospitality and retail offer.

“We have more activity planned in terms of our ‘Sparkle’ programme which will be announced over the coming weeks.”

The Scarborough rink will be open from 3 December to 2 January.

The rink will be open daily Monday to Saturday from 11am to 8pm and 10am to 7pm on Sundays.

Admission will be every hour, on the hour, with skating experiences lasting 50 minutes.

Skaters who prefer a more peaceful experience will be able to join ‘relaxed’ sessions on Tuesdays, Thursday and Sundays.  The music will be at a lower volume and flashing lights turned off.

Bookings can be taken either directly via the website www.scarboroughicerink.co.uk or from the Open Air Theatre box office.

Tickets cost £10 for adults and £8 for children (aged four years old or over).  Discounts are available for groups, families and residents of the borough.

The council says it is delighted to support the rink and has been working closely with Scarborough’s Town Team to offer the new attraction for residents and visitors.

Councillor Jim Grieve, Scarborough Borough Council cabinet member for the quality of life, said:

“I’m really excited that Scarborough is getting its own ice rink this year.

“I have no doubt it will be a popular attraction for residents and visitors who will be able to get their skates on and have fun on the ice, right in the town centre.

“It’s another way of encouraging people to come to the Yorkshire coast during the festive period to enjoy everything our amazing borough has to offer.

“I hope people are able to have some fun on the ice, especially after a very challenging 18 months.

“I am grateful for the support of Scarborough Town Centre Team in making this happen.”
