Celebration of Major Milestone for Scarborough YMCA

Scarborough's YMCA is celebrating it's 175th Birthday today.

The group was one of the founding YMCAs opening in 1846.

The Birthday celebrations have been delayed by a year due to COVID, Liam Downey from the Scarborough branch says it's a fantastic milestone.

YMCA Scarborough is a registered charity, run by local people which focuses on providing support and opportunities to young people and the wider community.

The YMCA says it aims to provide opportunities for all young people, whether they’re facing difficult and challenging issues or simply looking for something to do.

"We use our dance and fitness studios, meeting room, sports hall and 290-seat theatre to provide a unique range of activities including sports, youth club, musical theatre (we put on a number of top-quality productions each year – recent examples include Jesus Christ Superstar, Our House, Grease, Little Shop of Horrors and Guys and Dolls), Arts Award, volunteering and our very own YMCA Band. We are the permanent base for Rowlies Academy of Dance and Yorkshire Coast School of Ballet."

Liam Downey from the YMCA says that COVID meant they couldn't celebrate the 175th anniversary last year, but they intend to make up for it today.

YMCA Scarborough does not receive any money from National YMCAs, their services are funded by local people for local people. The groups is running a fundraising appeal as part of it's 175th anniversary year at ymcascarborough.uk/donate
