North Yorkshire Council's transport boss is calling for the county's Mayor and MP's to back the dualling of the A64.
There are fresh concerns that plans to dual the A64 could be scrapped or delayed.
North Yorkshire Council's executive member for Transport, Councillor Keane Duncan, is concerned that the new government has been very quiet on it's plans for road projects.
Councillor Keane Duncan is concerned that the new labour government has been slow to signal it's intentions over the proposed upgrade.
He wants the regions politicians to get behind the scheme.
Councillor Duncan fears the project could stall or be abandoned altogether due to the new Labour government's focus on bus and rail infrastructure, he's stressed the importance of the A64 for the economic prosperity of North Yorkshire, particularly the coastal region. He stated the county would struggle to compete with other areas without adequate road infrastructure. The current congestion on the A64 is, in his words, "strangling" economic growth.
Beyond the economic impact, Duncan also highlighted the safety concerns surrounding the A64. He described it as a dangerous road that has tragically claimed too many lives. He believes that investing in bus and rail infrastructure will not address the fundamental safety issues that necessitate a road upgrade.
Councillor Duncan urged fellow councillors from all parties to put aside political differences and unite in their efforts to secure the A64 upgrade and emphasised the need for a collective voice to ensure the government delivers the necessary improvements for North Yorkshire.
He specifically called upon the newly elected Labour mayor and MPs to publicly state their position on the A64, urging them to lend their support to this project that is "so essential" for the county.
