There are calls for a full review of education in Whitby to be carried out before a decision is taken to close Eskdale School.
The Whitby Secondary partnership want to close the Eskdale site from September 2024 and move pupils to the Caedmon college site, they say falling pupil numbers means running both schools isn't viable.
A public consultation on the closure plan is currently underway, but the "Save Eskdale" group say a full review should take place before the closure decision is made.
Terri-Anne Jones is from the Save Eskdale school group and says they are calling for a full review of education in the town.
Whitby County Councillor Phil Trumper also thinks a review of education in the town is needed.
Earlier this month Whitby Town Councillors voted to call for a review of education arrangemtns in the town.
Town Councillor Rob Dalrymple says that the Town Council's response to the consultation will include the call for a full review of all education provision in the town.
The closing date for responses to the consultation is 5pm on Friday, 31 March 2023.
The consultation can be completed online at https://consult.northyorks.gov.uk/snapwebhost/s.asp?k=167542956340
North Yorkshire County Council have published background information at https://www.northyorks.gov.uk/proposal-amalgamate-caedmon-college-whitby-and-eskdale-school-1-september-2024
All responses to the consultation received by the closing date will be considered by the new North Yorkshire Council Executive on 18 April 2023.
If the Executive decides to proceed with the proposal, then statutory notices would be published on 27 April 2023. These notices would provide a further four weeks for representations to be made, by 25 May 2023.
A final decision would then be scheduled to be taken by the Executive on 20 June 2023. If agreed, the schools would amalgamate from 1 September 2024.
