The Yorkshire Coast's volunteer rescue teams were kept busy yesterday with a number of training exercises and call outs.
Making the most of the last of the evening light on their weekly training session Whitby RNLI crew were out training last night to prepare for all eventualities when saving lives at sea. Ceri Oakes captured this impressive shot of the town's all weather lifeboat in action.
Bridlington's inshore lifeboat crew were conducting their own training exercise when a concerned member of the public dialled 999 and asked for the coastguard after spotting what looked like a person in the water, just off the Spa.
The ILB Ernie Wellings 852 was undertaking mooring and berthing drills in the harbour and responded immediately, Helm, Jason Stephenson, took his crew to search the vicinity and discovered the casualty was in fact a football, which was recovered safely. Also on board was Steven Craven and two new crew members, Daryl Ashby and Josh Smelt, who get to say they had their first ever official shout. Even though on this occasion it was a football, it could well have been a person.

Elsewhere Scarborough's RNLI team were training on Tuesday and after countless hours of intensive training, Scarborough RNLI crew member Pete McGeown has qualified as a mechanic and lifeboat officer.
Pete was passed out during Tuesday’s training exercise by RNLI machinery assessor and trainer Ben McGarry. Ben spent a couple of hours assessing Pete on various drills including faults, VHF/MF/HF communications and emergency operating procedures. Pete is now a fully qualified mechanic on the Shannon all-weather offshore lifeboat. He is a member of the inshore and offshore lifeboat crews.
