Budget Approved to Rebuild Scarborough's Demolished South Bay Chalets

£338,000 has been allocated to rebuild ten chalets in Scarborough's South Bay.

The chalets below the Clock café were demolished after a landslip in 2018. A retaining wall adjacent to the Clock Café failed, being caused to rotate forward by pressure from behind and ended up pushing forwards the Grade II listed chalets in front causing them to deflect.

A further collapse of the retaining wall occurred in November 2018 with a section of the Southern end collapsing completely, flattening some of the chalets, and another section of wall left resting on the back of the remaining chalets. The chalets affected were demolished in December 2019.

In August 2020 work started to fix the retaining wall, that work completed in March 2021. Now the Borough Council's cabinet has approved a plan to rebuild the listed structures.

Councillor Liz Colling says there is strong local support for the restoration.

A report presented to the borough Councils Cabinet said:

"Reinstatement of the chalets will significantly restore the visual amenity of the area as well as conserving the heritage of the area. Members will be aware that significant works to regenerate the South Cliff Gardens are underway and approaching completion. The reinstatement of the chalets is complementary to the wider South Cliff Gardens project."

Chris Bourne is the Borough Councils' Projects Manager, he says the heritage of the chalets will be an important factor in the new build but says there is also an opportunity to modernise some aspects of the chalets.

The Council's Conservation Officer has stated, in respect of the Grade II listing and curtilage listing, that the reinstatement of the lost chalet block must be on a similar or like-for-like basis to gain support from the Local Planning Authority and Historic England.

A £338k budget has now been approved to enable the appointment of a conservation accredited architect to design, project manage, seek consents and the appointment of a contactor to construct the chalets.

Design work is expected to be completed by September. The Council will then need to apply for planning permission for the works. It's hoped construction would begin in early 2023.
