"Bring Your Own Sample" to Scarborough Sea Water Quality Event

Scarborough residents are being invited to take their own sea water samples to a meeting with experts from Imperial College London.

A community event is taking place in Scarborough to investigate the quality of the sea water. The event is being run by Amazing Communities Together, a national organisation, in partnership with Imperial College London and Barrowcliff Big Local. The event will be held on Monday 10 February at Gallows Close Play Centre from 2pm.

Bill Chatt from the Big Local says Experts from the Environment Team at Imperial College London will be speaking at the event, they will be analysing the quality of sea water around Scarborough using samples collected by the community.

Locals are being encouraged to bring along their own samples of sea water for comparison. They are asked to use clean, empty water bottles for their samples to avoid contamination.

Bill has already taken 10 samples from both the North Bay and South Bay and sent them to Imperial College for analysis. Bill said he used an app to record the exact location of where he took each sample.

Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions and discuss their concerns about the water quality with experts. Refreshments will be provided by Team Gallows and Barrowcliff Big Local.

Bill highlighted that the event is about “community groups coming together to do something for the community”. He added:

“This isn’t about hanging Yorkshire water out or hanging any authority out. This is about uh community groups coming together to do something for the community, and that’s all we’re about”.

The findings from the event could be used to improve sea water quality in Scarborough and other coastal communities. Imperial College is considering working with other coastal communities in the future to see what the differences are around the country. They are also considering creating a badge for sea swimmers to wear, which would allow them to track what they have been swimming in.
