Brid's First Point On The Board After Coulo's Comeback

Thursday, 15 August 2024 06:00

By Ben Edwards with Andrew Snaith

Michael Coulson netted his first Bridlington Town goal as the Seasiders fought back from a goal down on Wednesday night.

Despite falling behind at the end of a half they dominated, Bridlington Town showed good character to net the equaliser in their first away game of the season against Brighouse Town.

Just one change was made to the starting lineup, with Benn Lewis replacing Kyle Fanning in defence due to a minor leg injury.

Adrian Costello admitted his side could’ve quite easily been 3-0 up within the opening 10 minutes, as Matty Bowman’s early effort from close range was tipped over by Kyle Trenerry.

Alex Markham’s ball over the top then found Jack Moore-Billam, who squared it to Michael Coulson with an open goal, though the defender made an unbelievable last-ditch tackle.

Moore-Billam continued to look a threat as he fed through Bowman, whose low cross just evaded Coulson and Ethan Harrison. Harrison then produced a decent curled effort, which went just over.

Two minutes later, Coulson picked the ball up on the left flank, cut inside, but fired wide at the near post.

Bowman was tripped high up the pitch on the left flank to win a free kick, which Pete Davidson took. He whipped it to the back post, where Markham was off-balance and headed wide.

Brighouse flashed an effort across goal from range, but it went wide, before they opened the scoring deep into the first half. Niah Payne squared the ball to Danny Edwards, who tapped home.

Harrison nodded the ball down to Coulson just under five minutes after the restart, whose strike from close range was saved before the offside flag went up anyways.

Brighouse came close to scoring when a cross from the right found Myron Gibbons in space. He cut the ball back to substitute Jack Normanton, who fired over.

After Brighouse nearly doubled their advantage, Bridlington Town found the equaliser with the next attack. Davidson played an outstanding ball over the top with the outside of his foot. Coulson ran onto it, before sweeping the ball past Trenerry.

It was the forward’s first goal for the club, and he almost netted his second just minutes later, curling a free kick 20-yards out from the right hand side onto the crossbar.

The crossbar was rattled again three minutes later, this time from James Willamson’s header following Davidson’s deep free kick, though the skipper was offside anyways.

Late into injury time, the hosts were awarded a controversial free kick as Markham was judged to have committed a foul. Seb Malkowski was able to catch Normanton’s set-piece, though, to keep the score level.
