Bridlington Town Host Sheffield

Bridlington Town will welcome the oldest existing football club, Sheffield FC, to the Hudgell Solicitor Stadium later.

It will be 11 days since the Seasiders last played, as their trip to Pontefract Collieries was postponed on Saturday morning due to a waterlogged pitch.

It was one of six postponed fixtures in the Northern Premier League, which also included Sheffield FC’s home game against Grantham Town.

Bridlington Town’s most recent match saw them progress to the East Riding Senior Cup Semi-Final thanks to a 3-0 win over Hessle Sporting Club, their first win of 2024.

Bridlington’s last league game on Saturday 3rd February also ended 3-0, though it was a defeat away from home against Cleethorpes Town.

3rd February was the last time Sheffield FC played, so they will go into the game off the back of a 2-week break. It was a 1-0 victory at home against Liversedge FC, thanks to a goal from former Seasider Nathan Modest.

Before the Liversedge match, Sheffield’s long trip to Ashington AFC saw them pick up a 3-1 victory, so they will approach the encounter with Bridlington confidently having got two consecutive victories under their belt.

However, before the back-to-back wins, Sheffield did suffer three losses in a row, including a defeat on penalties against Northern Counties East Premier Division side Handsworth FC in the Sheffield and Hallam Cup Third Round.

It will be a battle of two teams at a similar part of the Northern Premier League East table, so it could end up being a crucial game in terms of where both teams finish at the end of the campaign.

Bridlington Town are 14th with 29 points. Sheffield FC sit two places and two points behind the Seasiders, though they have played four fewer games!

The Seasiders will be looking for revenge over Sheffield, as they left the Home of Football Stadium with a 3-1 loss back in September.

In a game of little quality from both sides, Lewis Dennison opened the scoring after 12 minutes, though Sheffield equalised on the brink of half time.

Bridlington failed to hold on for a point, with Curtis Morrison netting twice in the final 10 minutes. That being said, the Seasiders have proved since then that they are now a much improved side.

Last campaign, both games between Bridlington Town and Sheffield FC ended 1-1. The match at Queensgate at the start of February was Adrian Costello’s first in charge of Bridlington, with both sides scoring in the final 10 minutes.

In the reverse fixture, Jack Griffin’s free kick cancelled out an early Sheffield opener.
