Bridlington's reputation for Lobster is to be used as a springboard to bring more food tourism to the local area.
A number of schemes are being proposed to bring more visitors to the area include promoting Bridlington as the lobster capital of Europe through a "Bridlington Bay" initiative.
The council and others have invested more than £100,000 including on events such as pop-up lobster tasting and the Bridlington Bay Lobster Roadshow set for this summer and autumn.
The initiative aims to encourage the local fishing industry to supply restaurants with their catch, 80 per cent of which is exported overseas where it fetches a higher price.
The East Riding Council's Director of Economic Development, Claire Watts, says there are plans to introduce a monthly seafood market to increase food tourism.
300 tonnes of lobster worth more than £4m was brought to shore in Bridlington in 2019 but much of the lobster consumed in Bridlington is imported from Canada and most of the town's own catch is being exported.
Now the East Riding Council wants to see more of the local catch used locally and is aiming to create events around the "Bridlington Bay" brand to bring more food tourism to the area.
The Council is leading on the delivery of the Bridlington Bay Lobster Strategy, initially setting out plans for a five-year period 2020-2025, being the minimum necessary period to establish the Bridlington Bay Lobster brand.
In establishing the Bridlington Bay Lobster brand and the ‘Lobster Capital of Europe’ and ‘Fresh from the Bay’ straplines, the aim is to generate new industry, new jobs and a new identity for the town by changing and improving the image of the resort and expanding its market. This includes multiple opportunities to positively differentiate Bridlington from other traditional seaside towns, creating new economic opportunities for both the shellfish industry and local tourism through the development of lobster themed activities and products.
Plans to launch the Bridlington Bay initiative with a local festival were scuppered by coronavirus but now those plans are being revived.
Director of Economic Development, Claire Watts says there are plans to introduce monthly sea food markets and possibly a big festival later in the year.
A ‘Bridlington Bay Lobster Roadshow’ is to be rolled out at local markets throughout the summer and autumn, primarily in Bridlington, Hornsea and
Withernsea.
