Dunkirk spirit is alive and well in Bridlington after the cancellation of the town's 1940s festival.
The Old Town Association announced at the weekend that they have called off the popular 1940's Festival planned for this Sunday, the exact reason for the cancellation is not clear.
Now local businesses are working together to put on an alternative vintage festival.
Nikita Roberts has a shop in the old town, she's teamed up with her publican friend Holly to try and rescue something from the event.
Nikita says the traders in the old town have come together to create an alternative "vintage festival" to try and fill the gap.
Although the new event wont benefit from any street closures the team say it will have the same atmosphere as the planned festival with a number of vintage stalls and activities taking place at the local pubs and shops. They have produced a poster to publicise the new event.
Kimberley Thomas is a community support ambassador in Bridlington, she thinks it's important that some form of event does go ahead on Sunday and says the cancellation of the 40's festival was a shock.
Nikita says there was a huge outpouring of disappointment when the Old Town Association announced the cancellation of the 40's festival both from visitors and locals.
The cancellation announcement came on Saturday in the form of a post on the Old Town Association's Facebook page which said:
"Unfortunately, due to circumstances way beyond our control, we have had no choice but to cancel our 1940’s festival next Sunday.
Please understand we don’t like to do this, we have explored every avenue to try and avoid this, the council have been brilliant trying to help us, and we as a team are completely devastated on having to cancel.
We have been working tirelessly since Christmas to make this fantastic event happen, as we do every year ( with the exception of Covid), and because one certain member of our team has been mis-leading us for weeks and blatantly avoided the truth, we have had to take this decision.
We can guarantee that we have already taken measures to make sure nothing like this happens again.
We hope as an Association you can understand this very difficult decision we’ve had to take, and we hope you will be able to trust and support us again next year, and help us come back and make this great event better than ever.
We are in the process of contacting all traders etc privately, please bare with us.
Again our sincere and heartfelt apologies.
The Bridlington Old Town Association"
Kimberley Thomas is calling for more clarity around why the 1940's festival was cancelled at short notice, Kimberley says there are questions that need to be answered.
The Old Town Association say in a Facebook post that the concert planned for Saturday night as part of the original 1940's festival will still be going ahead.
The replacement Vintage Festival will be taking place on Sunday (June 11th) from 10am in Bridlington Old Town.
